Meet Coach Biggs From Colby College

Get some insight into one of our visiting coaches!

I’m in my first year coaching the Colby College men’s team, and honestly, it’s been incredible. Stepping into a program that’s been around for over 50 years and getting the chance to rebuild a real rugby atmosphere; one built on community, care, and the kind of camaraderie only this sport creates, has been something special to be a part of.

Currently I have my World Rugby Level 100 certification, and even with coaching taking up most of my time, I’m still a player with Portland Rugby. I thought I was done playing when I took the Colby job, but I stuck it out a little longer and ended up being part of something unreal: helping Portland win our first New England Rugby Conference Championship in 35 years. After we make our run at the D2 Men’s National Championship this spring, I’ll finally hang up my boots for good.

I’m also a school counselor in the same district I grew up in, and I’ve been doing this work for over seven years now. I really do love what I do. Alongside coaching full time and working in the schools, I’m also a Maine whitewater raft guide. It’s an adrenaline-filled job, but it’s one I take seriously, and it’s given me the chance to meet people from all over while leading them down some of New England’s best rivers.

But above everything else, I’m a husband, and hopefully someday a dad, with an incredible wife who supports all the work that comes with my passions.

My favorite rugby memory honestly happened recently watching a group of gents believe in each other fully and pull off victories they earn together. Those moments hit different. As a coach, nothing compares to giving back to the game and seeing players love it the same way I was taught to love it. Coaching has been one of the biggest gifts in my life, and I’m grateful every time I step on the field.
